Philadelphia Museum of Art - Information : Associated Groups : Collab : Student Competition: "The 2009 Competition: Tabletop Luminaire
Competition Brief

Collab will hold its Seventeenth Annual Student Design Competition at the Philadelphia Museum of Art on Monday, November 16, 2009. This year’s competition will be held in conjunction with the Museum’s exhibition Marcel Wanders: Designer celebrating the innovative design work of the Dutch designer, the recipient of Collab’s 2009 Design Excellence Award.

Marcel Wanders: Designer presents the designer’s own favorite work from among the hundreds of products he has created for various European manufacturers as well as for Droog Design and Moooi, of which he is also art director and co-owner. Trained in The Netherlands and Belgium as an industrial designer, Wanders has consistently challenged the premises of modernism. “We can no longer fall in total awe at a tube being bent. We can no longer tell our audience that a product is better because it is easier to make,” he said in 2007. “We have to challenge industry so they will learn to follow instead of lead.” With wit, humor, formal elegance, and above all, discipline, Wanders has taken up that challenge, advancing technological research into production methods and materials in designs that can be both environmentally friendly and playfully quirky at the same time. A true visionary, Wanders has created a body of work that is innovative and entirely original.
The exhibition will be on view from November 21, 2009, through June 6, 2010, at the Collab Gallery, Perelman Building, Philadelphia Museum of Art."

I.D. - 2010 Call for Entries

I.D. - 2010 Call for Entries: "Since 1954, the Annual Design Review has recognized the best in product, furniture, graphic, and environment design, from the iconic to the obscure. Throughout the years, this annual showcase has chronicled the evolution of design, and highlighted its impact on our material and visual culture. Each year, the featured work is chosen by a jury of leading practitioners, who, along with I.D.'s editorial team, focus the abundance of submissions into a clear survey of the state of design. The resulting overview is published in the July/August issue of I.D. magazine — the Annual Design Review issue."

GreenSleeves

"Few would challenge the introduction of a bit of greenery into a city environment. Toronto residents, Eric Cheung and Sean Martindale, are making this basic urban space ideal into a reality with their poster pocket planters. The duo carve their way through existing posters to create little pockets, then fill them with potting soil and plants to create an impromptu green wall system. The result is a bit of greenery that effortlessly blends into the existing urban landscape. Best of all, Eric and Sean want to empower eco- and locally-minded folk by keeping the process open source– and are making their cutting patterns available online."

urbanSHED International Design Competition

urbanSHED International Design Competition

The urbanSHED International Design Competition challenges the global design community to create a new standard of sidewalk shed design and develop a prototype worthy of today's New York City.

We invite engineers, architects, designers and students from all related fields to compete. Competitors will generate innovative, compelling and environmentally friendly proposals to thoroughly re-imagine temporary sidewalk shed design while improving the pedestrian experience.

The New York City Buildings Department, American Institute of Architects New York Chapter, the Alliance for Downtown New York, the New York Building Congress, the Illuminating Engineering Society New York Chapter, and the ABNY Foundation (Association for a Better New York) with additional support from the Structural Engineers Association of New York, the New York City Department of Planning and the New York City Department of Transportation have partnered to create this open competition.

Design Challenge
urbanSHED International Design Competition challenges designers to conceptualize a cutting-edge sidewalk shed to protect pedestrians, improve the pedestrian experience– and make New York City even more attractive for generations to come.

More than 6,000 sidewalk sheds flank New York City’s buildings and construction sites. They span more than 1,000,000 linear feet and typically remain in place for nearly a year. While these sheds protect pedestrians from construction debris and support other construction structures, they undermine the beauty of New York City’s architecture.

We’re seeking a fresh, new sidewalk shed design that’s sustainable, economical, meets or exceeds current safety requirements and City regulations, improves technical and structural performance – and creates a better environment for the people who live in, work in and visit New York City.
