Biomimicry - Unbreakable Glass -- Chemists Steal Engineering Tricks from Sponges

By studying the glass sponge, scientists could learn how to create a strong material out of something that seems to be frail. It may also hold the secret to making glass at room temperature, instead of the extremely high temperatures required to do so today. Researchers believe that the individual glass fibers in the sponge are formed by a protein at the center of each glass filament.

It looks like frozen smoke. And it's the lightest solid material on the planet. Aerogel is perfect for a variety of insulation applications including apparel, daylighting, oil and gas and LNG and cryogenic systems. It can also absorb oil and create a matte finish for coatings. Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory scientist Alex Gash shows us some remarkable properties of this truly unique substance.
