Both design using well known objects. There is better way to re-use material, for example, Pull-Tab purse using aluminum tab of can. This design reduses recycling energy and waste of aluminum. Sometimes, it is better to use disposed materials directly.

A very perceptive point that you are making, and very timely. Energy use has always factored into the cost of products not just re/upcycled one. But its now becoming a very big part of cost with increased global energy demand and reduced supplies. A minimum of energy use in manufacturing, shipping and using seems to work well in designs for this competition.
